Results: The U.15s took on Corofin in the rematch of the SFAI Evans Cup in the Sports Park on Saturday. The fixture was abandoned at 1-1 with ten minutes to go due to the referee attaining an injury with Westport on top in that game. Westport might have had the territorial advantage in the first half with Alan Carroll shooting over and a great move by Gary Barnicle, who fed James Gibbons to set up James O’Donnell, who shot wide. As in the first game, it was Corofin that took the lead, and it was from a corner that went all the ways to the back post for a close range finish. Corofin started the second half stronger and tested Conor O’Malley with a couple of efforts. The visitors doubled their lead with a simple tap in after Conor O’Malley parried the initial shot. Westport came close through Brian Mullen when he shot just wide, but the Corofin keeper had little to deal with in shots throughout the game, as they came away with a 2-0 win. In defeat, hopefully, the Westport players will learn that communication is a vital component on a football pitch as well as creating space and finding angles to receive passes and look to become better at retaining possession of the ball against better players.
The Sports Park was served up a classic of a game on Sunday afternoon as the Juniors took on High Flying Galway side, Corrib Rangers in the Third Round of the Connacht Cup. In a game that was end- to-end, the Red and Black took the lead through Kevin Joyce, before the Tribesmen equalised. David Hoban made it 2-1 for the ‘Port, but Rangers bit back before half time. Westport put Rangers to the sword and David Hoban made it 3-2 early on. Dessie O’Malley added with a spectacular thunderbolt to make it 4-2, and it looked like game, set and match. Corrib pulled one back to 4-3 and were on the ascendancy once more, piling the pressure on the Westport goal; the pressure paying off with a dramatic equaliser. United were rattled but regrouped to rescue the game that was played at lightning pace. United got their noses in front through the evergreen Vinny O’Malley but there was a twist in the saga as Corrib Rangers, in the dying seconds, had an open goal, and somewhat blazed the ball over the bar. It was a let off in a classic game of football, but United held out in a 9 goal thriller to advance to Round Four.

In the Oscar Traynor Cup tie against Inishowen in Milebush, Westport United were well represented by Joe Lawless and Martin Geraghty at centre half, Danny Scahill and David Horkan in central midfield and Dessie O’Malley up front. The U.15s kicked off the SFAI Evans Cup campaign in Mount Temple, Co. Westmeath as they took on ADSL outfit and last years double winners, Temple Villa. Westport dominated the game for large periods and were a constant menace against a Temple Villa side that showed that they could play themselves. Westport were worthy winner, coming away with a comfortable 4-0 win with goals from Gary Barnicle, who hit a hat trick and Killian Browne, though Temple Villa had chances.

THIS was more like it. A barnstormer of a match between two totally committed teams that reminded everyone why the Connacht Cup means so much to footballers.
The Juniors exited from the FAI Junior Cup yesterday on a 4-2 scoreline at the hands of Manulla. It is the first time in nine years that Westport lost to Mayo opposition and failed to make the open draw in the competition and it is only the third time that Westport lost over ninety minutes over that period. Vinny O’Malley and David Cameron netted.
The Juniors travelled to Ballyheane in an important league game, in which a win would keep the pressure on Ballina Town. Westport got off to a disastrous start as they found themselves 2-0 down with two quick goals. Supporters that travel to Pat Quigley Park would tell you that when Westport goes down, they never win, but the history books were torn apart when David Hoban finished off Dave Horkan’s header.
United made it 2-2 when Vinny O’Malley finished off David Cameron’s perfect assist. The second half was equally as pulsating and United finally hit the front when Vinny O’Malley flicked the ball over the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net. Ballyheane came back near the end to make it 3-3 with a spectacular lob-volley. The clock was winding down before Westport were granted another lifeline, when Dessie O’Malley headed in Dave Horkan’s free kick to go 4-3 up. Westport got a massive let off at the death when Ballyheane rattled the crossbar but the visitors grimly hung on to a 4-3 win that keeps them in the hunt for the League Title.

A HAT-trick for Dessie O’Malley helped United maintain their 100% start to their title defence while for Kilmore it was a further reminder of the harsh realities of life in the top division. United were comfortable throughout without ever having to really stretch themselves on a sultry Saturday evening at the Sports Park.

A first forty-five minutes to forget, a second, which proved that the hunger still exists, and a finale that had the visiting supporters lurching from deflation to elation within the space of thirty seconds. In other words, a typical FAI Junior Cup outing for Westport United. It’s never straight forward (and it should have been last Sunday) and if there is a junior team in the country who puts those close to them through the mill in the same way as this United team manages on a regular basis, then we’d love to meet them.
