Westport United’s Connaught U.12 Cup campaign came to an end in a showery Sports Park as Mervue United came out 4-2 winners.
United, having defeated the same opposition on January 7th 3-0 were in for a much different contest on this occasion and Mervue took an early lead. Mervue had the better of the first half, adding two further goals while Adam Nugent had a chance that went across goal. Fionn O’Hora pulled a goal back before the break, following up on Adam Nugent’s parried shot.
The second half was more end to end as Westport looked to get back into the game. Adam Nugent reduced the deficit when he hammered home from close range. United had a great chance to equalise but Mervue United wrapped up the tie with a penalty following a handball on the line. Conor Walsh was somewhat unlucky as the ball spun over the line after getting a good hand onto the spot kick.
Mervue advance in the competition while Westport are now awaiting the visit of Southend from Waterford in the next round of the Skechers SFAI U.12 Cup plus the Regional Final of the same competition.
Westport United reach the final of the Skechers SFAI Cup Regional semi final after a 3-0 win against Athenry FC.
The first half created few opportunities with Joe Sweet heading over and Cillian White putting in a great defensive performance, covering plenty of ground. Athenry had a penalty appeal turned down. United did break the deadlock before the break when Finbarr McLaughlin smashed home a thunderbolt from the left.
Athenry put Westport under early pressure and Conor Walsh had to make one fantastic save. Westport then took control and a shot from Sean Heaney led to a bit of ping-pong football inside the box when follow up efforts from Finbarr McLaughlin and Adam Nugent were saved, blocked and cleared off the line. Finbarr McLaughlin put United 2-0 with another rocket launcher that the Athenry goalkeeper couldn’t keep out and from that point, there was only one team in the tie. Sean Heaney completed the scoring with a cool right foot finish into the keeper’s right hand corner.
United can take positives out of the performance prior to their next game, which is a trip to Ballybofey to take on Cappary Rovers in the last 16 of the Skechers SFAI Cup.
