The Westport United FC Annual General Meeting took place in the clubhouse at United Park on Friday night before a packed clubroom.

The meeting commenced with a minutes’ silence for the late John Fahy.

Outgoing secretary, Marie King read the minutes of the last AGM and they were adopted as per se.
In hid Chairman’s address, Myles Staunton paid tribute to Tom Tarmey for his role as Chairman before he stepped down and acknowledged the work his predecessor put into the club. Mr. Staunton thanked outgoing Club President, Sean McKenna for representing the club in a figurehead capacity, in which the ambassadorial role was finely encapsulated. He went on to thank the committee for their hard work and support and also a word of thanks went to Pat Duffy at the FAI for all the behind the scenes work that was needed to be done and his general assistance when the club needed it. The award winners at the Mayo Association Football League were congratulated and the four major recipients were singled out for a special mention; Martin Geraghty for winning the Mayo Footballer of the Year, John Brennan being named Mayo Manager of the Year, David Hoban picking up a Special Merit Award for his performances with the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Regions Tournament in Italy last September and Kenneth Gannon being recipient of the Special Media Award for promoting the club through social media and live streaming matches. At underage, the achievements by the Girls U.12 team were also recognised with their WFAI achievements and being the recipients of the Eric O’Reilly Memorial Cup, which they will be presented on February 10th.

Tribute was paid to Westport United Community Soccer Club Ltd for the work they have done with their fundraising initiatives and the opening of United Park, which was a great day and successful with all the underage playing that day and many thanks to everyone in making the day such a success. The ground is shortlisted for a national award. Also, the members were thanked for organising and implementing the main club fundraisers and events.

Westport United signed a deal with Nike last November and are the new kit supplier in a very attractive deal with exciting initiatives for the club and the work that John Casey has put into the sizing days and orders from customers from both Nike and Jako preceding it was recognised.

A Club Underage Charter was ratified and the sub-committee tasked to draw up the charter put in plenty of hours to formulate with child protection and safety issues, code of conduct and players and coaching pathway all included to put a solid structure in place for the future. Furthermore, a club structure was also announced by Myles Staunton and each role within the club was explained to the floor and he was delighted to hear that there was so much interest from people in joining the committee.

Mr. Staunton informed the floor that there are a number of important dates that will be communicated throughout the year with the various events including a UEFA U.16 Development Tournament in May.

In his treasurer’s report, outgoing treasurer, Colm Keane gave a comprehensive and detailed report. Mr. Keane has expressed optimism at the extra fundraising initiatives now available to the club since the opening of the new facilities, particularly in running blitzes. A new registration system will be put in place which Peter Flynn explained to the floor in which players/parents could get credits to their membership fee by partaking in fundraising initiatives such as the weekly lotto and Last Man Standing. It was proposed from the floor that the parents of each age group have meetings with the club and Peter Flynn from the Development Committee prior to registration to explain the full process. The new process is very much about rewarding people who contribute voluntary time to the club and for those who would prefer not to get involved in the likes of the lotto and coaching that they would pay a little more.

John Casey, Gear Co-Ordinator gave an update on the Nike deal. He explained that Westport United are currently one of only two clubs in the country that has the current deal, which is an initial three year term that may be extended by agreement. There would be up to eight Westport United coaches travelling to St. George’s Park, Burton Upon Trent for specialised coaching. There will be one Westport United team travelling to Nike Partner Clubs for Nike Scheme Competitions. There is also an online club shop with Teamwear Ireland with discounts and the shop can also be accessed through the Westport United Facebook page. Teamwear Ireland will also sponsor spot prizes for the club and there is also a substantial credit note for the club also.
